— Concept
A weekend home set into a coffee estate. Stone, glass, and cantilevered timber.
The brief was simple: disappear into the slope. The house reads as three stone volumes set into the hillside, joined by a cantilevered timber bridge.
The plot falls 11 metres across its length. Rather than terrace and flatten, we stepped the program down the slope in three volumes — entry and parking at the top, living at the middle, bedrooms at the lowest level — connected by an open timber bridge that reveals the canopy below as you descend.
Walls are coursed local stone, set with a deep recess at every joint. Roofs are flat, planted with native grasses. From the access road above, you don't see a house at all — only stone, hedge and forest.
